Design Industry and Volunteer Work

I’m deeply involved with Vancouver’s creative and design industry, as a volunteer member of Creative Pulse, which produces at-capacity monthly casual speaking and social events for Vancouver’s advertising/design creatives and other industry professionals. CP’s aim is to connect like-minded creatives in a collaborative and inspiring setting.

Creative Pulse has hosted speakers such as The Futur’s Chris Do, Phoebe Glasfurd from Glasfurd & Walker, Ben Hulse and Greg Durrell from Hulse & Durrell and also hosted the hugely successful Behance Portfolio Reviews. You can find out more about Creative Pulse at creativepulse.co and facebook.com/CreativePulseVancouver.

I also volunteer at Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC BC Chapter) and partner events, like Practivism and Interesting Vancouver.

BMX and Action Sports

In addition to graphic design, I’m involved with the action sports industry. Working with a team, I’ve helped organize some of the most prestigious events on the BMX calendar, including the legendary Red Bull Elevation contests and the Metro Jam BMX contest series worldwide.

Since 1999 I’ve been an active Director of the Vancouver Skateboard Coalition (VSBC), working with the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park Board on solutions for active youth parks, as well as working with other municipalities around the Lower Mainland. I contributed to the City of Vancouver/Vancouver Park Board 2005 Skateboard Strategy which is the document that outlines criteria for selecting skateboard park locations amongst other things. This is still the current strategy used by the City of Vancouver today.

Skateparks I’ve been involved with: Hastings, Vancouver Skate Plaza, Bonsor/Metrotown, Kensington, Mount Pleasant, Leeside DIY Park, Queensborough, UBC Skatepark, Quilchena, and the successful saving China Creek Skatepark campaign.

I’m also the lead member of the Vancouver Dirt Jump Coalition, which worked with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board on the development of the pumptrack at Empire Fields at Hastings Park (July 2015) and the Vanier Park Dirt Jump Park in Vancouver (October 2010) and the addition of the new, larger pumptrack in 2019, which further opens up the accessibility of the park to all ages and abilities.

If you’d like to get in touch with me about getting dirt jumps or a pumptrack built in your community, please reach me here.
