MacNeil Bikes 2007 Catalogue

The 2007 MacNeil Bikes catalogue is a double-sided oversize fold-out poster. I oversaw the production, and worked on many of the product elements on the backside.

Shown are the front and back of the poster, and some details views of the products. The products ‘colour chips’ are close-ups of the actual products.

MacNeil Bikes 2006 Catalogue

The 2006 MacNeil Bikes catalogue is the catalogue that almost didn’t happen. I oversaw the art direction, design, production and writing of this catalogue, and turned it around at a record pace. Juggling content coming in from 3 different continents, and turning a 36-page catalogue over a weekend made for some hectic times, but you’d never really know it by looking at the catalogue. The catalogue showcases all the newest product offerings, an overview of the team, tech specs and distributor info.

Pivotal Logo

The Pivotal identity came about because of the need to differentiate a new product in the BMX seat (aka ‘saddle’) marketplace. This new concept for affixing a seat and seat post was new, and needed to be defined not just as a new technology, but also as it’s own brand.

The MacNeil Video DVD Packaging

For this project I designed everything from the ground up. It was the first DVD I’d ever done, so there was lots to learn, particularly when it came to the DVD menus. This was the first DVD in the industry to take advantage of translucent plastic jewel case, so it also features graphics on the inside of the case.

Shown are the mocked-up dimensional cover, cover, back, and inside of the transparent jewel box, and just the wrap showing both with and without the DVD-Disc mocked into place.

MacNeil Bikes ‘San to Van’ DVD Packaging

‘San to Van’ is a road-trip video following the MacNeil Bikes pro team’s tour from San Diego, CA to Vancouver, BC. With injuries plaguing most of the team during the trip, and members flying in and out at different points, this video showcases the fun, friendship, and frustration that happens at they travel north up the I-5 freeway with scheduled stops and demos along the way.

In addition to the overseeing the production of the video, case artwork, titling/menus, I also wrote the copy for the DVD jewel box, website, catalogues and any other collateral for promotions. The video was released just as reality TV had really broken through into the mainstream, so I came up with the tag-line “Reality TV that doesn’t suck”, which appears on the 2007 print catalogue/poster and website.

MacNeil Bikes Website

Working at MacNeil Bikes/World Bicycle Sports was the Swiss army knife of all jobs. You really had to be good at all kinds of things, because we had to do it all ourselves, and do it quickly and as inexpensive as possible, because there just wasn’t the budgets to hire external companies. At the end of the day, if you didn’t do it – it didn’t get done. Working on the MacNeil website as part of a design team is the perfect example of the Swiss Army knife concept, as it was an ever-evolving entity with a couple of us working on different components of it over the years.
