For this project I designed everything from the ground up. It was the first DVD I’d ever done, so there was lots to learn, particularly when it came to the DVD menus. This was the first DVD in the industry to take advantage of translucent plastic jewel case, so it also features graphics on the inside of the case.

Shown are the mocked-up dimensional cover, cover, back, and inside of the transparent jewel box, and just the wrap showing both with and without the DVD-Disc mocked into place.

I also wrote the summary text that appears on the back of the jewel box: “With a team consisting of the most innovative riders from around the globe, this first video release captures both the diverse talents and friendships that make up the MacNeil Team. I hope it inspires you.” Featuring Full sections from the MacNeil/SoBe Pro Team: Alistair Whitton, Nick Halsey, Dom Mach, John Heaton, Dave Freimuth, Ruben Alcantara, and Jay Miron. Plus, a consolidated section with the MacNeil World Team: Andy Kent, Lee Mellor, Ng Chee Kong, Benny Korthaus, Robin Fenlon, Romauld “Bibi” Noirot, Shoe-G Ueyama, and Axel Jurgens.

‘San to Van’ is a road-trip video following the MacNeil Bikes pro team’s tour from San Diego, CA to Vancouver, BC. With injuries plaguing most of the team during the trip, and members flying in and out at different points, this video showcases the fun, friendship, and frustration that happens at they travel north up the I-5 freeway with scheduled stops and demos along the way.

In addition to the overseeing the production of the video, case artwork, titling/menus, I also wrote the copy for the DVD jewel box, website, catalogues and any other collateral for promotions. The video was released just as reality TV had really broken through into the mainstream, so I came up with the tag-line “Reality TV that doesn’t suck”, which appears on the 2007 print catalogue/poster and website.

MP3 audio player package design for an upstart electronics company, Ice Audio. The client came to us with nothing more than the prototype audio player, requiring a clamshell design and wanted a couple different versions – a lighter and darker version of the packaging to be designed. The Ice Audio line of audio players was carried at Best Buy and Future Shop in Canada. Unfortunately I never received any of the actual samples, but I did see them in Best Buy about 6 months after all the design work was done.

Shown are the final design in white (front + back), in black (front + back), the audio player, and some workup on the clamshell concept.

MacNeil Bikes seat header card and seatpost card packaging. Die-cut header card folds in half to create a hang tag, stapled to a clear plastic bag which holds the seat.

The seatpost packaging card folds in on itself at the bottom, to create a rigid package that holds the seatpost in place (strapped in with cable ties higher up) and is easy to hang in bike shops.

MacNeil Bikes has always taken pride in pushing the boundaries of design in BMX, and we wanted to do something different than just putting the hubs in a standard box. We found a scored transparent plastic substrate that was flexible enough to score/fold, yet hold up to the weight of the product when stacked. With the angled scoring on the substrate, we had to print the graphics on the flat side, which worked out quite well. I oversaw the design and production process for the packaging of the hubs.

Shown are the empty hub boxes, and with the hubs in the box as they would be shipped.

Ceneca seat and seatpost card packaging. Seat packaging card for Ceneca Seats, is printed on a rigid paperboard stock, with a punched hole in the centre where the seat is affixed via the extruding bolt. Shown are a mocked-up version of the card, the front artwork, and back artwork.

This design takes advantage of the already existing die-line for the MacNeil seatpost package.

The Flatland Manifesto video series of flatland-specific BMX videos covered riding from all corners of the globe. This video series put out three videos per year, and was distributed worldwide.

Shown are the fronts, backs, and covers shown with and without the spine artwork. Box packaging was designed so that when the entire series were lined up on a shelf, the spines would create an image.

Header card for Ronin’s ‘Shelter’ packaging. The Shelter is a heavy-duty neoprene audio player holder, worn around the waist for use when riding your bike, or other active uses. I created the illustrations that appear on the back to showcase the various audio players the Shelter could hold.

The packaging for Ronin’s sprockets took advantage of their very small gear sizes, and was able to use a CD-ROM jewel box to house the sprockets.

Designed and produced artwork for the Ten Pack ‘Evolution’ DVD packaging, DVD menus, video intro, ads and promotional collateral for the video release. For the design of the jewel box, we didn’t want to have the typical rider/action photo on the cover/back, and chose to keep it simple. Ten Pack has been one of Canada’s largest BMX-specific distributors since 1997, so we wanted to have a distinctly Canadian feel without going over the top.

A full-length team video showcasing some of Canada’s best BMX riding talent from coast-to-coast. Features Ten Pack Distribution riders Jay Miron, Dave Osato, Max Vincent, Dustin Guenther, John Heaton and many more.
